The Bradford Factor helps employers to better decide when further investigation is necessary. It is calculated as follows: B = Sยฒ x D.

  • B is the Bradford Factor score.

  • S is the total number of an individual's spells or instances of absence over a set period.

  • D is the total number of days of absence of that individual over the same set period.

The set period is a year from the date entered when running a Bradford report.

For example, this is how 10 days of absence could be shown:

Number of instances

Calculation

One instance of absence with a duration of ten days.

1 x 1 x 10 = 10 points

Three instances of absence: one of one, one of three and one of six days.

3 x 3 x 10 = 90 points

Five instances of absence: each of two days.

5 x 5 x 10 = 250 points

Ten instances of absence: each of one day.

10 x 10 x 10 = 1000 points

To set up the Bradford Factor:

  1. Click Access Button image then click HR Admin.

  2. Click Settings then click Holiday & Absence.

  3. Turn on the Bradford Factor Display.

๐Ÿ“ŒNote: The option will be available to be turned on or off for everyone and it can't be specified who can see the score or not. It's an on or off for all areas and managers or employees can not be restricted.

  4. To receive notifications when an employee has hit a trigger point, select Enable Bradford Factor Alerts.

To include a sickness in the Bradford Score, ensure you include it in the absence scheme.

The following helpful infographic will help to explain the Bradford Factor further.

The Bradford Factor score will not include weekends if the work pattern the users are assigned to is not set up to count weekend days too.
โ€‹
Bradford Factor will only include passed sickness days not booked sickness days, which means that the result of BF will not change until the sickness day ends.

๐Ÿ“ŒNote: If thereโ€™s a holiday or other event, any sickness recorded on those days wonโ€™t be included in the score calculation.
